WTF is an Elmer? In Ham Radio jargon an Elmer is a Ham who is considered to have knowledge and wisdom, and can provide good advice. Therefore, I am not an Elmer.
I have personally had two Elmers that gave me the skills I needed to pass the exams and get my ticket. Tim Doe my maths teacher at school and Reg G8QR who taught me Morse Code.
At the radio club I used to attend NARC, we had Arnold G3PTB, Arnold was the archetypical Elmer, elderly, early call sign, lots of knowledge, a good speaker. Arnold's knowledge was in HF, valves, CW, thus he was slightly out of date. No disrespect, but times were changing, and Arnold wasn't keeping up.
Most radio clubs have an Elmer, Beware of the pseudo Elmer, the person talking too much. Empty vessels make most noise. You may prefer to seek out the quiet person sat in the corner watching with a wry smile of their face.
YouTube abounds with channels about Ham Radio. There is a lot of dross. But there are a few gems.
If you want a real Elmer, then Jim W6LG, sadly now a silent key, had a superb YouTube channel that is well worth your time.
