A cautionary tale about connections!

I have, on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, gone out portable and then failed because I had the wrong connectors.

You can read about one of the failed portable attempts in my 145 Alive post.

After the third connection cock up I decided to do something about it. By 'something' I mean standardise the connections for portable. Make it impossible to fail.

I chose BNC for portable. I bought BNC connectors for the coax, 8 metres of Potaflex from M&P. I changed the connector on the 49:1 to BNC. I put SMA to BNC adaptors on the two handhelds. The last link in the chain was 100mm lengths of coax, BNC socket one end, PL259 and N on the other. I also made some of these with right angle connectors as that works well with the HTs and 705. The 2 metre T2LT had a PL259 on it and I chose to fit an adaptor to it for BNC. I also bought some adaptors to put in the bag, SMA, PL259, N male and female to BNC.

Then I wrote a checklist, tested the checklist by setting up on my drive before going out. This amuses my neighbours.

I also sold the radio that had an N socket (Yaesu FT-8900)!
The FT-991A has an N for VHF/UHF but I don't plan on taking that portable. The Icom IC-705 is BNC, the Yaesu FT817 has both BNC and SO239 (Well done Yaesu).

I think I have it sorted. I will find out on the next 145 Alive. Plus I have a daft plan to POTA in Hyde Park in central London, but that will have to wait for the Spring.
